exhibit

Unearthing Futures / Desenterrando Futuros explores contemporary earthen artworks and the dialogue between regional roots and global perspectives. The exhibition looks at the relationship between humanity and the elemental material of unfired earth.

The show highlights the transformative power of mud—bridging tradition and innovation, ecology and artistry. Work by rafa esparza, Christine Howard Sandoval, Ronald Rael, Santino Gonzales, Joanna Keane Lopez, and Gabriel Chaile navigates technological progress, societal change, and environmental stewardship. The exhibition also extends beyond the galleries to historic and contemporary earthen building sites in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.

The legacy of adobe and earthen clay in the Southwest is rooted in Indigenous traditions and enriched by successive cultural influences. Unearthing Futures reflects on this legacy and asks how the transformative power of mud might inspire strategies for an uncertain future.
